COMMUNITY PREVENTION RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT

LiveWise

The field of substance abuse is ever-changing and the drug threats facing area students continue to grow. As this field continues to change it is increasingly important to provide parents and students with the best possible information to ensure prevention efforts are effective. The LiveWise Coalition provides a gathering place for partners to create and implement strategies and activities for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention within the community. The LiveWise Coalition has been combating substance abuse issues in the Omaha area for nearly a decade and provides a wide variety of free resources to area school districts within the Nebraska counties of Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington to help supplement prevention efforts. Currently the Live Wise Coalition is involved in a targeted effort to better inform the community about the growing threat of prescription drug abuse as well as ongoing concerns with marijuana use. The following is a list of free resources available: Prescription access and disposal took kits How to Raise a Drug-Free Kid Prescription Lock Boxes Safeguarding the home workshop Print materials regarding myths and warning signs of use Parent / teacher conference booths, coordination of funding streams for in-class student presentations. “http://heartlandfamilyservice.org/what-we-do/programs-and-services/addictions/substance-abuse-prevention-coalitions/livewise-coalition/”

The LiveWise Coalition was established in 2003 as a community coalition to help address prevention of the abuse of substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) in the Omaha metro area.  LiveWise serves the Region 6 service area, which includes Cass, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, and Washington counties in Nebraska.  LiveWise works to bring together community members to leverage assets and build resources in order to promote healthier lifestyles.  LiveWise is a non-profit Coalition and for the past several years has been funded through various State and Federal Grants, as well as, Private Foundations and Private Funding.  The vision of LiveWise is, “Communities empowered to change societal norms reflecting healthy lifestyles free from problems caused by the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.”  Such societal norms that LiveWise is currently addressing are the acceptance of underage drinking in Nebraska and the misperception of harmful effects from marijuana.  In order to achieve this, LiveWise provides an array of services to the public to include educational presentations to local schools that focus on ATOD topics. We also offer Responsible Beverage Service Training to liquor license holders, community platforms to address drug trend issues, and the NEXT Youth Empowerment Movement, which is a youth advocacy platform being utilized currently to all teens in Douglas County.  If you would like more information about LiveWise, how to help, or to join us for a monthly meeting, please check us out online at www.livewisecoalition.org, like us on Facebook at LiveWise Coalition or follow us on Twitter @LiveWise_Neb
